Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemeteries maintain individual rulebooks that govern stone dimensions, finish types, and permitted imagery. Most NJ cemeteries require written approval before any new installation — a process Headstone Design Studio initiates on your behalf. Flat-ground sections typically limit upright monuments to specific height ranges, while garden sections may restrict ornamentation to approved symbols. We verify each cemetery's current regulations before a design is finalized, preventing delays and ensuring the finished stone is accepted on the first submission.

Foundation Requirements

Proper foundations protect both the stone and the surrounding grounds. NJ cemetery foundations are typically poured concrete, sized to support the monument's weight and resist frost heave through cold winters. Foundation depth and width specifications vary by cemetery and by stone size. Headstone Design Studio coordinates foundation work as part of every installation, ensuring the base meets the specific cemetery's engineering requirements. A correctly built foundation means the memorial remains level and secure for generations.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-based cemeteries in New Jersey — including Catholic, Jewish, and Eastern Orthodox grounds — often carry additional design guidelines tied to denomination. Jewish cemeteries may limit relief carving or figurative imagery; Catholic grounds sometimes require specific cross proportions. Headstone Design Studio's team is familiar with these distinctions and can advise on designs that honor both personal preference and denominational standards. We work respectfully within each faith community's traditions.

Headstone Design

Designing a headstone means making decisions that will endure for generations — shape, stone color, surface finish, lettering style, and any pictorial elements. Headstone Design Studio's design consultants walk families through each choice in sequence, beginning with the silhouette. Common shapes include the classic upright, the low-profile slant, and the flush flat marker; we also craft book-form, heart-shaped, and natural boulder styles for families seeking something less conventional. Stone choices range from black and gray granites to warmer pink and red varieties, all American-made. Once a shape and material are selected, we discuss lettering. Roman serif, Old English, and Gothic script are the most-requested styles; custom lettering is also available. Engravings and etchings — portraits, floral motifs, religious symbols, military emblems — are planned at this stage as well. Every design choice is documented in a proof drawing reviewed and approved by the family before any cutting begins. Nothing proceeds to the workshop until the family is satisfied.

Unspecified Options

Beyond standard shapes and finishes, Headstone Design Studio accommodates a wide range of personalization options. Dual-purpose companion stones can be designed to hold two inscriptions on one face, ideal for couples planning ahead. Veterans' markers incorporate official branch emblems and may be combined with government-furnished markers. Photo-etching transfers a portrait directly onto polished granite with remarkable clarity. Surface textures — polished, honed, rock-pitched, or steeled — affect both appearance and light reflection. We discuss every available option honestly, without pressure, so families leave with a memorial that genuinely reflects the person it honors.

Custom Design Process

The Headstone Design Studio custom process is methodical. After the initial consultation, our designers prepare a scaled drawing that shows exact letter spacing, imagery placement, and border details. Families review this proof — in person at our Morris County showroom, or by secure digital delivery. Revisions are made until the design is right. Once approved, the design moves to our carving and engraving team. Sandblast engraving and hand-chiseling are both available depending on the detail level required. After production, installation is coordinated with the cemetery and scheduled at a time convenient for the family.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Step one is the design consultation — a focused conversation about shape, stone, lettering, and imagery. Step two is material selection: we source American-made granite in the color and finish the family chooses, reviewing actual stone samples at our Morris County showroom. Step three is the proof drawing, a scaled rendering showing every element in its precise position. The family reviews and approves this drawing before any work begins. Step four is layout transfer — the approved design is carefully traced onto the stone surface using our template system. Step five is the carving and engraving itself. Depending on the design complexity, our team applies sandblast engraving for crisp, deep letter cuts, or hand-chiseling for relief elements and fine detail work. Portrait etchings are executed under magnification to capture facial structure accurately. Step six is finishing and inspection: each surface is cleaned, polished where specified, and reviewed against the original proof before leaving the workshop. Installation at the cemetery — including foundation preparation, permit coordination, and final placement — is handled by Headstone Design Studio from start to completion.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“We came in not knowing what we wanted. The designer showed us stone samples, explained every lettering option, and sent us a proof the same week. What arrived at the cemetery was exactly what we approved — no surprises, no errors.” — Karen, Morris County NJ
